Welcome to Drawing Down Lore!

Hello Lovelies!

Welcome to Drawing Down Lore!  I'm Kerry Mairie, an illustrator and museum educator. This blog is my garden of ideas and a place to sow my research for my long-term project, Tarot Equus.

Tarot Equus pairs equine myths and legends from all over the world with tarot symbolism.  It is  based on the Waite-Smith tarot. Throughout the deck are stories of gods, spirits, legends, folk traditions, and monsters.  Some might be familiar, like the unicorn and Odin's horse, Sleipnir.  Some may be new to you, like the part-man, part horse Tikbalang of the Philippines, or the flying horse Uchchaishravas of Hindu culture.

At the time of this writing, almost all of the cards are planned out and I'm well into drawing the major arcana.  This project will take some time.  There will be a total of 81 images: the deck, the card back, and two additional magician cards.  Why three Magician cards?  I had three ideas for the Magician and couldn't decide which one I liked best, so I drew three.  I have a companion book to write as well, to serve as both a key to the tarot and a story book.  That's where this blog comes in.

I'm ecstatic about this project.  I hope you will follow along as it develops.  I will be posting some of the images from the deck here.  You can also find my work on Instagram, on Facebook, and on Etsy.

Blessed Be!
